Amouage Decision Review NZ: Notes, Longevity and Who It Suits
Amouage's Decision is one of the newest releases from the Omani house, and one of its most striking. It takes the frankincense that runs through so much of Amouage's history and pairs it with bright bergamot, juniper and cardamom, so it smells fresh and airy as well as resinous. If you're wondering whether it belongs in your collection, here's everything you need to know.
What is Decision?
Decision is an Eau de Parfum launched in March 2025 by perfumer Quentin Bisch, who also created Guidance and Purpose for the house. It is one of the two fragrances (alongside Existence) that make up Eternity, the fourth and final chapter of Amouage's Odyssey Collection.
Creative Director Renaud Salmon has said the pair grew out of a trip to Jebel Shams, Oman's highest peak, where juniper trees grow on the rocky slopes. Decision is the bold half of the duo: Amouage describes its opening as "an olfactory bolt of lightning" that cuts through the darkness of uncertainty. Amouage lists it as a fresh, woody, aromatic fragrance with a 33% oil concentration, aged for five weeks (three weeks of maceration and two of maturation).
The notes
According to Amouage, the notes are:
- Top: pink pepper, bergamot, cardamom
- Heart: frankincense, juniper, myrrh
- Base: patchouli, Atlas cedarwood, vanilla
What it smells like
Decision opens bright and crisp. Bergamot gives it a citrus sparkle, pink pepper adds a little fizz, and cardamom brings a cool, aromatic spice. It feels clean and energetic straight away.
The heart is where Decision shows its Amouage roots. Frankincense comes through with the cool, almost mineral, citrusy side of the resin rather than heavy church smoke. Juniper berries give it a gin-like, piney freshness, and myrrh adds a darker, balsamic depth underneath.
As it settles, Atlas cedarwood brings a dry, polished woodiness and patchouli adds an earthy edge. A warm touch of vanilla softens everything in the dry-down, so the finish feels smooth and comforting rather than austere. Amouage says the vanilla is meant to convey "the profoundly liberating effect of acceptance".
Fragrantica's reviewer described it as starting with "instantly enjoyable spicy aromatic woods and incenses", with juniper "illuminating it from the inside", before it takes on a more modern, slightly metallic sheen typical of Quentin Bisch's style.
The vibe
Decision feels confident, clear-headed and refined. It's an incense fragrance for people who want something brighter and more wearable than the darkest resinous scents. Amouage presents it with a masculine-leaning bottle, but there's nothing about the notes that stops anyone who loves fresh, woody incense from wearing it.
Longevity and projection
With a 33% oil concentration, Decision is built to last, and the Fragrantica review notes that "it lasts forever". As always, performance depends on your skin, the climate and how much you apply. Woody, resinous bases like this tend to linger on skin well into the day, so you rarely need to reapply. Start with two or three sprays and adjust from there.
Seasons and when to wear it
- Autumn and winter: the frankincense, myrrh and vanilla come into their own on cool days and crisp evenings.
- Spring: the citrus, pepper and juniper make it bright enough for mild weather, from a Wellington spring day to an evening in Queenstown.
- Summer: it's fresher than many incense fragrances, but on a hot, humid Auckland day go lightly.
- Work and daytime: polished and clean enough for the office with a light hand.
- Evenings and occasions: a confident choice for dinners and special events.
Who it suits
Decision is a great pick if you:
- love frankincense but want something fresher and brighter than a heavy, smoky incense
- enjoy aromatic notes like juniper, cardamom and pink pepper
- like dry woods such as cedar with just a touch of sweetness
- want a versatile signature scent that moves easily from day to night
It may not be for you if you prefer sweet gourmands, big florals, or very light skin scents.
How it compares with other Amouage fragrances
Decision vs Interlude Man
Interlude Man (2012, Pierre Negrin) is one of the house's most famous incense fragrances. Both feature frankincense, but Interlude is dense and smoky, with oregano, opoponax, leather and agarwood. Decision is much brighter, cooler and more aromatic. If Interlude feels like a dark, smoky room, Decision is a clear mountain morning.
Decision vs Jubilation XXV Man
Jubilation XXV Man (2008, Bertrand Duchaufour) also centres on frankincense and myrrh, but wraps them in blackberry, honey, labdanum and oud for a rich, fruity, opulent feel. Decision shares the resins but swaps the richness for citrus, juniper and cedar, so it reads cleaner and more modern.
Decision vs Purpose 50
Both are by Quentin Bisch and both put frankincense at the centre. Purpose 50 is an Exceptional Extrait that's deeper and more textural, with vetiver, sandalwood, papyrus, saffron and suede. Decision is the lighter, fresher and more aromatic of the two.
Decision vs Guidance
Also by Quentin Bisch and part of the Odyssey Collection, Guidance is a creamy, fruity floral amber built on pear, hazelnut and frankincense. Decision is drier, woodier and more aromatic, and less sweet. Many people find they like both for different moods.
