Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP vs Extrait: Which Should You Buy?

Few modern fragrances are as instantly recognisable as Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Baccarat Rouge 540. Walk through any busy mall in Auckland or along Lambton Quay and there's a decent chance you'll catch that airy, sugary, mineral glow trailing behind someone. But once you decide you want it, there's a catch: there are two main versions, the Eau de Parfum and the Extrait de Parfum. They share a name and a lot of DNA, yet they feel noticeably different on skin.

Here's a practical, no-hype guide to help you work out which one suits you.

The notes: what's actually in each

Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum is usually described with jasmine and saffron up top, an amberwood and ambergris heart, and a base of fir resin and cedar. In practice, the effect is a bright, almost transparent sweetness, often compared to spun sugar or candy floss, sitting on a sharp, mineral woody-amber base.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de Parfum keeps the saffron, jasmine and cedar, but adds a noticeable bitter almond note in the opening and leans on ambergris, woody notes and musk in the base. The result is denser, rounder and a touch more nutty.

If you only remember one thing: the EDP is the airy, luminous one; the Extrait is the richer, almond-tinged one.

The vibe

EDP: Light, radiant and a bit glassy. Many wearers describe it as "transparent" in a way that still somehow fills a room. It can come across as slightly sharp or synthetic in the first few minutes, which some people love and others find a little piercing.

Extrait: Smoother and more velvety. The almond softens the sharp edges and gives the whole thing a creamier, more intimate feel. It reads a little more "evening" and a little less "office-friendly glow".

Both are genuinely unisex. You'll find plenty of opinions online about one leaning more masculine or feminine than the other, and they contradict each other, so let your own nose decide.

When to wear each

  • EDP: Brilliant for daytime, work, brunch and warmer months. Its brightness suits a sunny Kiwi spring or a summer evening out without feeling heavy.
  • Extrait: Better suited to cooler weather, dinners, date nights and special occasions. On a crisp Queenstown or Christchurch winter night, its richer texture really comes into its own.

Longevity and projection

Both versions have a reputation for good staying power, though how long any fragrance lasts depends heavily on your skin, the weather and how much you apply. As a general rule of thumb:

  • The EDP tends to project further and leave a more noticeable trail, especially in the first few hours.
  • The Extrait tends to sit a little closer to the skin and feel more personal, while staying smooth and present.

Some people find they go "nose-blind" to BR540 quickly because of its ambery materials, so if you can't smell it on yourself after a while, others probably still can. Go easy on the sprays, particularly in enclosed spaces.

Who should pick which?

Choose the EDP if you: - want that famous, radiant BR540 trail - prefer lighter, brighter fragrances - plan to wear it often, including during the day and in warmer weather

Choose the Extrait if you: - like richer, smoother textures - enjoy almond, marzipan or nutty notes - want something a bit more intimate for evenings and cooler months

Not sure? That's completely normal. The differences are real but subtle, and the best way to choose is to wear each for a full day.

Try both as decants

Because these two are so close, it's well worth trying them side by side before committing to a full bottle. Our decants are original fragrance in glass atomiser vials, available in 4ml, 8ml and 16ml sizes, which is plenty to wear each over several days.

Tip: spray one on each wrist in the morning and check in at lunchtime and again in the evening. You'll quickly notice which one you keep sniffing.

FAQ

Is Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait just a stronger EDP?

Not exactly. While it's a more concentrated format, it also smells different, mainly because of the bitter almond note and a smoother, denser base. Think of it as the same scent in a richer concentration, with a character all its own.

Which version is better for everyday wear?

Most people find the EDP easier for everyday wear because it's brighter and lighter. The Extrait is lovely daily too, but many save it for evenings and cooler weather.

Can I layer Baccarat Rouge 540 with other fragrances?

You can, though it's quite distinctive on its own. If you experiment, try it alongside simple vanilla or musk scents and test on skin first so it doesn't overpower.
