Guidance 46 by Amouage

Amouage Guidance vs Guidance 46: Which Should You Buy?

Amouage's Guidance quickly became one of the house's most talked-about modern releases, with its creamy pear, hazelnut and frankincense signature. Then came Guidance 46, an "Exceptional Extrait" that takes the same idea and expands it. Both are by perfumer Quentin Bisch, both share the same core, and both are popular in our range. So which one is right for you?

A quick background

  • Guidance Eau de Parfum was released in 2023 as part of Amouage's Odyssey Collection.
  • Guidance 46 followed in 2024 as part of the Exceptional Extraits collection. Amouage says it's dosed at a 46% concentration of perfume oils, which is where the name comes from.

The notes

Both fragrances share the same core: - Top: pear, hazelnut, frankincense - Heart: saffron, rose, sambac jasmine, osmanthus - Base: sandalwood, Akigalawood, ambergris, vanilla, cistus

Guidance 46 adds extra notes, according to Amouage: - Top: rose water, pink pepper, bitter almond - Base: ambrette, Georgywood, cypriol

What they smell like

Guidance (EDP)

Guidance opens with juicy pear and a creamy, nutty hazelnut, lifted by a soft, resinous frankincense. The heart is a lush floral blend of rose, jasmine and apricot-like osmanthus, with saffron adding a gentle, leathery warmth. In the base, sandalwood and vanilla make it smooth and creamy, while ambergris and woods give it radiance.

It's bright, plush and quite sweet, with a striking fruity-floral character.

Guidance 46

Guidance 46 has the same recognisable heart, but the extra notes shift its texture. Rose water and bitter almond add a soft, rosy, marzipan-like nuance, and pink pepper gives a little sparkle. In the base, ambrette, Georgywood and cypriol add depth, with a slightly musky, woody, earthy richness.

The overall effect is rounder, smoother and rosier, with a richer, more refined feel.

The vibe

  • Guidance: radiant, fruity and confident. A plush floral-amber with a bit of glamour.
  • Guidance 46: velvety, rich and polished. A luxurious, more intimate interpretation.

Both are unisex and suit anyone who enjoys creamy floral, fruity and amber notes.

When to wear them

Guidance works well for: - evenings out and dinners - special occasions - autumn, winter and cooler spring days - daytime too, with a light hand

Guidance 46 is ideal for: - formal events and date nights - cooler weather - moments when you want something richer and more luxurious

Both can feel heavy on a hot, humid summer day in Auckland or Tauranga, so one or two sprays is plenty in warm weather.

Longevity and projection

Both are known as strong performers, though results always vary with skin, climate and application. Amouage itself describes Guidance 46 as having opulent projection and sillage. A higher oil concentration doesn't automatically mean a fragrance will project further, and Amouage notes that the impact of concentration varies from formula to formula. Some people find the 46 feels denser and closer, while others find it equally loud. Either way, go easy on the trigger to begin with.

Who should pick which?

Choose Guidance (EDP) if you: - love bright pear and hazelnut - want a fruity, radiant floral-amber - want something a little more versatile for day and night

Choose Guidance 46 if you: - enjoy rose, almond and richer textures - want a smoother, deeper, more luxurious version - like the idea of an Exceptional Extrait for special occasions

Love both? Some people use the EDP for daytime and the 46 for evenings, though most will be happy with one.

Try both as decants

These two are close enough that a side-by-side test is the best way to choose. Our decants are original fragrance in glass atomiser vials, available in 4ml, 8ml and 16ml sizes.

Try one on each wrist and compare how they evolve across the day.
